The name comes from govor — “speech” in both Serbian and Russian, the two languages Govorly serves first.
Govorly began with a small, stubborn observation: people don’t forget languages because they’re lazy.
They forget because the tools they’re given waste their attention — long lessons, gamification that rewards opening the app instead of actually learning, and review that arrives either too early or far too late.
So we built Govorly around two things that genuinely work.
First, listening you can keep up with — short Serbian audio, pitched to your level, with a transcript that highlights each word as it’s spoken.
Second, review you can trust — every new word becomes a flashcard scheduled by FSRS, so it returns at the precise moment you’re about to forget it.
We kept what genuinely motivates, too — streaks, ranks, a steady sense of progress — but tied it to real recall instead of empty taps. You rise through the court by showing up and remembering, and a missed day never costs you the rank you’ve earned.
